What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a first-line approach to treating chronic conditions. LM-certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person care, prescribing targeted lifestyle changes to treat—and, in some cases, reverse—certain conditions when used intensively.
When necessary, we incorporate pharmacotherapy alongside lifestyle interventions, following evidence-based guidelines established by leading medical societies. Our goal is to empower patients with sustainable, science-backed strategies for long-term health.
Example of how Lifestyle Medicine guidelines align with the latest American Diabetes Association Guidelines:
“Youth with overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes and their families should be provided with developmentally and culturally appropriate comprehensive lifestyle programs that are integrated with diabetes management to achieve a 7-10% decrease in excess weight. Adolescents should be encouraged to participate in at least 60 min. of moderate to vigorous activity daily with muscle and bone strength training at least 3 days/week and to decrease sedentary behavior. Nutrition for youth with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, like for all children and adolescents, should focus on healthy eating patterns and emphasize consumption of nutrient-dense, high-quality foods, and decreased consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods, particularly sugar-added beverages. Intensive lifestyle interventions focusing on weight loss, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and dysglycemia are important to prevent overt macular disease in early adulthood.”
